The Richard Hughes Trio

Last night was wonderful with the captivating and enchanting Yvonne Evans, we look forward to seeing her again.  Next week we have the Richard Hughes Trio playing a range of standards from sweet and lyrical to low down and dirty!

Richard's initial training was in music of the classical composers. He was captivated as a youngster by the sound of live jazz at local venues which he used to frequent before he was old enough to buy a drink. His classical training continued, culminating in his completion of a degree in music at Exeter University in 1998. In the creative and improvisation side to his playing, he is self-taught.

Since taking up music full-time, Richard is a popular choice as sideman by bands and artists both locally and internationally. His experience is wide ranging having gigged regularly for over ten years in bands that range from modern jazz, gypsy swing, blues and boogie, latin, pop, accompanist for vocalists and instrumentalists in exams. Over the years, he has made many contacts and built up an extensive and varied repertoire.

Richard writes and creates his own music and has recently recorded and produced an EP with several self-penned ‘originals’. He has written several other pieces for a small jazz combo including sax and trumpet which remain unperformed or recorded so far.

A duo to delight

A bigh thank you to Tom Hill for playing for us on Monday night.  Next Monday will be having a real treat in the form of Zoe Schwarz and Rob Koral

Despite Zoë’s classical upbringing and studies it soon became clear that her forte was far more suited to blues, expressive ballads and jazz. It was only three years after her first jazz gig that Zoë had her first week at Ronnie Scott’s sharing a week with Monty Alexander.  She has also enjoyed success at Pizza on the Park, Stables-Wavendon, Vortex, 606 and many theatres and venues in the UK. 2008 is going to be her best year yet with a full programme of festivals the length and breadth of the country; from Swanage to Swaledale, Carswell to Litchfield, from Wales to London, to supporting Pat Metheny at the Lighthouse.

Rob Koral comes from a ‘self-taught’, more bluesy background; but has made his name on the British jazz scene, performing with the likes of Jim Nullen, Django Bates and Bill Bruford.  Rob moved to London early in his career and formed the successful band SKETCH with singer Sue Hawker. Sketch released several well-received albums, and appeared on the Old Grey Whistle test and BBC’s Jazz notes. Rob has played at all the major London venues, including Ronnie Scott’s, The Barbican, the Royal Festival Hall; as well as Jazz festivals and clubs all over the U.K, including Brecon, Glasgow and Swanage.

Tom and his lovely wife Jacqui now live in Worcestershire with their 4 children. Tom continues to work as a jazz bassist and also is quite busy as a voice over artiste and actor and is a presenter on Saga 105.7 in Birmingham.

The Physician at work

This week we have some very exciting news about our Bar Manager  Andreu,  who is  now  better known as "The Physician" after a few of our regulars sampled his outstanding cocktails !!

Andreu has been taking part in "The inspiring Creations Bombay Sapphire Cocktail Competition 2008" and has qualified for the semi-finals which are being held in London next Tuesday.  Each competitor has to create a new and individual cocktail for the judges .  Andreu's creation is a wildly refreshing combination of Bombay Sapphire, Lemon Grass, Ginger and Cherries called "Su-Phire" which starts with a slightly sweet taste but then the Ginger leaves a real zing in the back of the throat.  The "Su-Phire" will be available for all to try on our new Summer cocktail list and is definitely not one to be missed!

The cocktail competition final will be held in September so we have our cocktail sticks crossed - good luck Andreu.
